Chief Fell

Chief Derek Fell has served with the Sheriff’s Office since 2002. He is a life-long resident of Vigo County.  He obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Indiana State University.

He began his career as a correctional officer in our jail division and in 2004 he became a merited deputy sheriff.  Over the last 19 years, Chief Fell has served in various divisions and positions within the Sheriff’s Office including all three patrol shifts, criminal investigations, cold case detective, and crime scene investigator.

During Chief Fell’s career he has served in various leadership and chairman roles including reserve deputy coordinator, criminal activity task force commander, wage committee chairman, and awards committee chairman.

Chief Fell currently serves as Chief of Operations and oversees criminal investigations, training, county building security, reserve program, sex/violent offender registry, evictions, criminal activity task force unit, and business office.

Chief Fell has twice been awarded the Sheriff’s Commendation as well as Homicide Unit Recognition.

Chief Fell engages in community involvement and serves on the board for Chances and Services for Youth, as well as Crossroads of America Volleyball Club. He has actively participated in Real Men that Read program for the last several years.

Deputy Chief Fell

Chief Meng

Chief Deputy Stephen Meng has served the citizens of Vigo County since 1994.

Chief Meng began his career with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office as a Correctional Officer serving in that capacity from 1994 to 1998. He served as an officer, as well as being promoted to supervisor during his employment in the jail.

In 1998 he was hired as a Merit Deputy by former Sheriff Bill Harris. He thoroughly enjoyed working the patrol division, and stayed in that capacity for 20 years.

In 2019, he was appointed Chief Deputy by Sheriff Plasse. 

As Chief Deputy, he oversees the patrol division, the jail/custody division, juvenile center operations, as well as the fleet vehicle maintenance.

Chief Meng has also been heavily involved with the Terre Haute Junior Police Academy since 2006, participating in over 50 academies.

Chief Meng has received several awards and commendations over his almost three decade career serving the citizens of Vigo County.

Steve is a Christian, a husband, father, and grandfather.
