School Resource

The Mission of the Vigo County Sheriff’s School Resource Program is to provide a safe, uninterrupted learning environment for students, staff, and administration. Our commitment is to maintain a strong partnership with the Vigo County Schools.

The ultimate goal is for SROs to be heavily involved in the school community to serve as officers, counselors, teachers, coaches and role models. We also need to serve as a resource to the teachers, administrators and staff of all schools. It is our goal to constantly improve what we do and strive for excellence in keeping our kids safe and providing a high level of service to our school and the community as well.

Programs currently taught in our county schools include:

  • Kindergarten—When to call 911
  • 1st grade—Eddie Eagle Gun Safety
  • 2nd grade—Stranger Danger
  • 3rd—Not to be a bully
  • 4th—Gun Safety
  • 5th—Gateway drug program
  • 6th—Say no to drugs program

McGruff the Crime Dog is also available for K-2 students and McGruff comes and talks about bullying.

JR. Police Academy

JR Police

Our academies are designed to meet the needs of the children of our community that are interested in law enforcement. We are also committed to helping at-risk children choose the, "right path." Our goal is to provide a fun filled 4 days for the children but also teach them how to work together as a team and to be respectful toward one another which is a life learning skill. Finally, we want to show the children not to be afraid of the police and that we are their friends and always there to help and protect them. Jr. Police Academy is for current 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

The VCSC, in partnership with the City, County, Police and Sheriff's Office, launched a campaign called S.A.F.E. (students and families everywhere). This is meant to help students and parents navigate the resources available to them to help keep them safe, whether that's mental health resources, violence, social media threats and any non-emergency situation that takes place on school campuses or in the community.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Office is proud to support the Vigo County School Corporation on S.A.F.E.

Be Safe

S.A.F.E. (Students and Families Everywhere) is an educational campaign to help every student, parent, family member, teacher and citizen within Vigo County find resources to help keep them and their loved ones safe. This platform houses hotlines and databases to help navigate any situation that a student or parent may encounter or witness, on or off school campuses. With so many resources available, S.A.F.E. helps families by bringing all resources together in one place.
